Help! I Have Lost My Identity

I do not know about you, but becoming a homeschooling mom was exciting and let down at the same time. I was a mom with a career that I loved. A career that had taken me 6 long years of college to complete. Here I was giving up all of my hopes and dreams to stay at home. I was literally confused. (more…)

Thinking Thursday – New Ways to Use Wikki Stix

I am absolutely in love with these new ideas on how to use Wikki Stix. If you have never used Wikki Stix before they are long pieces of hand knitted yarn, that is coated with a non-toxic wax that allows them to stick together. And the company has now created tons of lesson plans that use Wikki Stix that are fun, hands-on, easy to use and engaging.

I noticed that there are a few lessons that connect with ideas that we have covered in Classical Conversations. Here are just a couple of them:

Parts of a Plant Cell

The pictures on the website make it very easy to understand the lesson plan and how to implement it into your homeschool curriculum. I love this picture. When I showed my 9 year old daughter the pictures of the different lesson plans, she was so excited that she started picking out ones that she wanted to do.

Constellation Designs

This lesson plan would be something fun to do while camping, or sitting around a campfire.

There are so many more lesson plans that will keep you learning for quite awhile.

Be Careful Little Eyes What You See!!

I don’t know about you, but as I mom, I seem to notice more inappropriate images every where that I go with my kids. I get so frustrated that they see images (usually of women) dressed inappropriately all the time. I currently have a 9 year old daughter that is such a girly girl. She loves fashion and just girly things in general.  Dressing modestly is something that is very dear to me, and I feel like I am fighting a losing battle.

How, What the Eyes See Affect Our Thoughts

Think of the time that you were driving down the road and saw a sign with a juicy hamburger and thought, wow, I could really go for a hamburger right now. You start to crave that hamburger and your thoughts are nothing but, how hungry you are all of sudden. The same thing is true when it comes to sexual images portrayed around us.

Younger Kids

Early exposure to sexual content in the media may have a profound impact on children’s values, attitudes and behaviors toward sex and relationships. Unfortunately, media portrayals do not always reflect the message parents want to send. (more…)

Thinking Thursday – Pace Recorder

Presentation Preparation

Pace Recorder is a FREE Android app that allows you to train your child’s voice to speak at an appropriate pace for presentations.

I know being a mom of two kids that are part of the Classical Conversations homeschool group, this is an app that I would use all the time. My children have to prepare and present a presentation each week. I would especially use this app with my older child, who has a tendency to rush.

This Pace Recorder app, has a simple pace indicator. Blue is when they are relaxed, green is for a balanced pace and red is when they are excited and speaking too quickly. It takes about 10 seconds for the Pace Recorder to turn a certain color. Your child can watch the screen as they speak and notice right away if they need to change the pace of their speaking or not.

As a tutor of Classical Conversations, I believe that this app would be very helpful with the older kids as they do their presentations in the classroom. Allowing them to change their pace during their presentation, would help to create an inner understanding of what good presentation pace sounds like.

You can also play back the recording to review how they did. Allowing them to hear themselves and understand where they need to slow down or speed up their speaking in the presentation. Nothing is better than allowing your kids to learn a new skill by seeing it themselves.

Thinking Thursday – Lingro

Online Dictionary

Do you have kids that struggle with vocabulary? Do they struggle with reading non-fiction websites? Is your child’s first language something other than English? Do you have a younger child that is learning how to read and understand new words? Lingro is a website that will fix all of these issues.

This is the coolest new online dictionary that I have seen in a long time. This dictionary lets you enter a website and then click on any word at that website to get its definition. Lingro even remembers all of the words that you looked up, so that you can easily review and study them. It allows your child to even play games to remember and review the vocabulary words that they looked up while they were reading the passage. This also allows the parents to see what words their child is struggling with as they are reading a certain passage about a certain topic. For example, if you are working on the Civil War and are having them read a passage online, then Lingro will help you to know what words they do not understand when it comes to this war.

Finally, do you have a student learning a new language. They can enter a website that has the information in the language that they are learning. If they get stuck on a word, they can click on it, and Lingro will translate it for them back into English.

This website is FREE and very easy to use. Please check it out.
