Does Your Faith Move the Mountains?
So often we want to call on the Lord to fix things when they go wrong, in our eyes. When our marriage is falling apart. When our kids won’t listen to us. When one of them is really struggling with a school subject and we don’t know how to help them anymore. When someone we love is sick. When we are low on financial means and don’t know how we are going to pay this months bills. When our car breaks down, and we don’t have the funds to fix it.
I could go on and on about all of our life issues that we want God to fix. But, do we really have the faith to believe that God will come through?
Is My Faith Strong
I was sitting with a friend, talking about some issues in both of our marriages that we had been dealing with for such a long time. We had both offered genuine advice of what we could do to make the situatin better, but we both felt kind of hopeless that either of our situations would ever change. We believed in God, but did we really.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to Him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
I have read this verse a million times. Yes, yes, submit to the Lord. I get that. Somedays I do. Somedays I think I can figure it out. But then the true meaning of this verse hit me. Do I really trust in the Lord with all of my heart? Or do I lean on my own understanding when it is convenient?
If my marriage is struggling, am I hitting my knees at every opportunity, and asking the Lord to show me His way? Asking for His will to be done? Do I truly trust Him to fix my marriage, no matter what that may look like? NO, I don’t.
I am too busy being stubborn. Humanly sinning, because I think that I should be taking the situation into my own hands and trying to fix it somehow. That is our way. We have to do something to try to fix the situation, otherwise it means that we don’t care. But, praying and trusting in God will actually fix it the way that is should be done.
When I read the last part of this verse today, it is like a light bulb went on. He will make your paths straight.
I do not know how many times I have wished that I had listened to God, so that my steps would have been straighter. That I had found where I wanted to go without have to take so many detours or steps backwards. I constantly yell at myself, for taking the long way around in too many situations and not learning my lesson the first time.
How do we Trust in the Lord?
First of all, stop thinking that you know how to fix any situation. Get on your knees and pray to God. Truly giving him the problem and letting it go. That doesn’t mean that you pray about something and then spend hours that day thinking of ways to solve the issue. This is what I do.
When we give God the problem, we must let it go. We must, rely on His understanding of the situation and realize that our own human brain isn’t capable of coming up with a solution in the way that He is.
Then we wait. This is the hard part. Waiting on God’s timing is very different than waiting on our timing. It may be months, or longer before God gives you an answer. And it may not be the answer that you want, but it is the right answer. The path that is straight, not curvy, with thorny bushes and mud holes. A path in the sunshine, showing you the way on sure-footed ground.
Why is this so hard for us? Because, usually the problem that we have is uncomfortable, physically or emotionally. We do not like to suffer in any way. We want the discomfort to go away as soon as possible. But God did not promise us a problem free life. There are going to be bumps that hurt and instead of pushing our way through them ourselves, we need to stop and give it to God. Truly give it to God. Knowing that the pain maybe there for awhile and that it is okay. His comfort will sustain us when the pain becomes too much. He will hold us up when we can not do it anymore. He will give us His peace, if we just ask.
So instead of continuing on the same path, that is taking you in the same circle, why don’t you change things up by giving your problem to God and trusting fully in Him first!
May God bless you and keep you,
